Salesian Priest 1921-2008 Father Alfredo Picchioni Fr Alfredo, (although everyone called him regularly Don Picchioni), was born in Gabba, a small village of Lizzano in Belvedere, Bolognese Apennines, on September 27, 1921, by Alfonso and Maria Muratori and there he was baptized on November 29th. He was third of six brothers and sisters, of which only his last sister, Elide, is still alive. In the same village he began elementary school, which he completed in the neighboring town of Gaggio Montano, where he received the Confirmation sacrament on May 10th, 1930. He was very fond of his family, people and homeland, although he had to leave them very soon in order to embrace religious life and priesthood. Actually at 15, in 1936 he left his native Emilia and moved to Piedmont, to the apprenticeship of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, where he carried on his studies and began discovering the Salesian vocation. He stayed there till 1941, when he joined the novitiate in the house of Villa Moglia (Chieri, TO), where he made his first religious profession on August 16, 1942, aged 21 years old. Meanwhile, Italy was at war, whose disastrous effects were felt, mainly after 1943, somewhat everywhere, and especially in Appennine mountains of Bologna, his native land, within religious houses too, requiring hardships of all sorts that got worse with the extension of war. Fr Alfredo, then cleric, experienced it all in a particular way in the community of Foglizzo (TO), where he spent three years of philosophical and teaching studies which he finished qualifying as a Teacher. From there he went to Mirabello Monferrato (AL) for the practical training period and he excelled in oratorical activities with great dynamism and involvement power which won him the sympathies of young people. In 1947 he moved to Bollengo near Ivrea for the theological course which he happily completed with the priestly ordination on July 1st 1951, by imposition of hands of Mgr. Rostagno, diocesan bishop. His first solemn Mass followed at his birthplace on August 15th . In the meantime, in 1948 he had taken his perpetual vows, binding himself forever to Don Bosco. |

Salesian Priest 1913-2007 Father Flavio Fedeli Passed away at 4 a.m., at 94, 78 of profession and 69 of priesthood. Admitted to hospital since last August 13 at the Soeurs de Notre Dame des douleurs in Abou Dis, Jerusalem, the dear Brother died down little by little until the final ending, exhausted by old age, the various aches and pains and almost absolute loss of appetite. The previous evening we were close to him, as many times each week, in the rest-home, and there was no telling that he would pass away during the night. Having entrusted him to the caring assistance of the sisters and nurses, we thought of returning the next morning still to take care of him. Instead here was the sad surprise. Unable to get in touch with us by phone, the sisters informed the Inspectorate centre and Fr Inspector accordingly shared with us the sad news. Since last year, clearly, Fr Fedeli was showing signs of poor health. A brother Coadjutor of our community took special care of him. Every day he accompanied him to the Church for mass, meditation, spiritual reading, and to say Lauds and Vespers, in which Fr Fedeli always wanted to join. Very sensitive and polite in manners, he thanked, apologizing for the inconvenience. And we really viewed him as a relic of the past, of those 80 years spent in the Congregation with such unselfishness in the various commitments and as much love for young people, especially the poor ones, whom he had met along his life. |

Salesian Priest 1914-1992 Father Armando Vettore Suddenly passed away about 10.45 on 11 June 1992. He was 77, 59 of profession and 50 of priesthood. Since over 10 years he bestowed to this community his powerful charge of brotherhood, of sheer exemplarity, of tirelessness in looking for all Community duties which he could still fulfil notwithstanding his failing health. Just in the midst of one of these household chores the Lord called him while, with shovel and rake he was tidying up the garden and a small courtyard under a burning sun: I found him lying prone on the ground, perhaps already lifeless. While the doctor and nurses, who had rushed in with the ambulance, were trying artificial resuscitation I could provide the beloved Fr Armando only the “conditional” unction of the Sick. Since over 15 years he lived with the "after effects of diaphragmatic infarction, serious column and coxofemoral arthrosis". Sometimes arthritic pains worsened and he was forced to use, lately, two small crutches. Besides this, he suffered from a severe hearing-impairment. |

Note: this is written by late Father Alfredo Picchioni in 1979 Salesian Priest 1905-1979 Father Natale Del Mistro Dear Brothers,On December 1 1979, at 01,15 a.m. our brother Father Natale del Mistro has passed away Age 74 .His Exc. Mgr. A. Bugnini, Nuncio said :”He expired peacefully and discreetly as he had always lived, finding all of us unawares. We could not even give him the last farewell, the fraternal goodbye. He passed, we might say, on tiptoe. In less than a month he died without causing any disturbance, just as he had always wanted.Admitted to hospital urgently, doctors diagnosed brain thrombosis by high pressure, aggravated by diabetes. He underwent every necessary medical treatment, but, unfortunately, without result. Was born at Maniago Libero(Udine) on 25 December 1905 from Marco and Luigia Constantin, parents religious and of deep Christian feelings. Since a Kid he nurtured a burning desire to become a priest and missionary; and therefore on October 12 1919 entered the Salesian Institute at Penango. |

THE DEATH OF FR. KEVIN BYRNE S.D.B. Salesian Priest 1920-1969 Father Kevin Byrne Fr. Byrne has paid a couple of visits here to help us out at Christmas, but normally he was so busy in Tehran he could not get away, but as this is the only publication that goes to the Salesians .in England and Ireland where all Kevin’s old friends are. I am·taking the liberty to write an appreciation of a friend I have known since he was fourteen and whom I looked on as a brother. I received the news of his death - the Sisters having driven there especially to bring it - outside the International School Ahwaz where I had arrived to say Mass. It was already nearly 6 p.m. And at 8.30 a.m. Fr. Peter had left for the Zagros Mountains by helicopter. I learnt the funeral was at 9.a.m. the following morning. It was therefore physically impossible to get there so as when I got news of my own brother' s death, I continued my normal tasks with a smile on my face and an ache in my heart. Kevin died the day before yesterday April 17th, after playing a game of soccer with the boys. He went up for a shower and then to his room and a few hours later, they found him dead. A heart attack was the diagnosis. |

THE DEATH OF Fr. GIACOMO STREIT Salesian Priest 1903-1971 Father Giacomo Streit He passed away as the result of a heart attack, on November 8, following almost eight months of disease. Our Brother was born in Monchstockheim, Diocese of Wurzburg, Bavaria, on December 17, 1903, from Gaspare and Regina Streit. He spent his early youth in his homeland and after having obtained the certificate of apprentice blacksmith, aged 19 entered the Salesian Institute of Fulpmes (Austria), at the end of August 1922, where he made the Probationship. Admitted to the novitiate the following year, he took his three-year vows in Ensdorf (Bavaria) on August 15, 1924, and took the perpetual ones in Marienhausen. In Benedikbeuern he finished the theological studies which were crowned with the priestly ordination on July 5th, 1936. In the same year he went, as a teacher, to the Salesian House of Legnago and in 1938 was in Tehran, Iran, as Pastor of the faithful of German language and stayed there until his death. Little is known of his life in Europe: the dear brother did not say much of himself and of his private things. He was better known in Iran, where he spent as many as thirty-three years doing activities which did not allow him to take any real holidays, except for two or three short stays in Germany to recover his health. While taking care of the faithful of German language and of all those who turned to him for spiritual and material assistance, he gave his valuable support to the Apostolic Delegation first and afterwards to the Nunciature until 1965. |
